LXD 5.15 has been released

Introduction

The LXD team is very excited to announce the release of LXD 5.15!

While not the most jam packed LXD release ever, this release includes some long requested features like support for non-UEFI virtual machines as well as the ability to rebuild instances in place.

It also adds a few smaller features and fixes a lot of bugs!

Enjoy!

New features and highlights

Non-UEFI support in LXD VMs (CSM)

LXD virtual machines have been designed to use a very modern machine definition from the start. This means a QEMU q35 machine type combined with a UEFI firmware (EDK2) and even Secure Boot enabled by default.

While this works great for modern operating systems, this can be a problem when migrating existing physical or virtual machines into LXD as those machines may be using a legacy firmware (BIOS) and not be bootable under UEFI.

This can now be addresed by setting security.csm to true combined with disabling UEFI Secure Boot by setting security.secureboot to false. This causes the UEFI firmware provided with LXD to enable CSM (Compatibiltiy Support Module) as well as tweaking the PCI layout of the VM slightly to allow booting a non-UEFI operating system installation.

Instance rebuild

It’s now possible to rebuild a LXD instance, effectively wiping its storage and reinitializing it with a clean image, keeping all configuration, devices, … attached to that instance.

Example:

lxc rebuild images:ubuntu/22.04 foo

Specification: [LXD] Adding support for instance rebuild
Documentation: https://linuxcontainers.org/lxd/docs/master/howto/instances_manage/#rebuild-an-instance

Container pinning based on NUMA nodes

On systems with multiple NUMA nodes (mostly multi-socket servers), it’s usually a good idea to have all your processes running on the same node. This allows for effecient memory sharing across processes.

In the past, you could have done that in LXD by manually looking at your NUMA nodes in lxc info --resources and then update limits.cpu with a specific pinning configuration for that.

But having LXD handle some amount of scheduling is useful to spread load evenly on the system, so we have now introduced the limits.cpu.nodes config key which can be used to specify the NUMA node (or nodes) to use for the instance, allowing for limits.cpu to remain a simple CPU count rather than a specific pinning.

Example:

lxc config set foo limits.cpu=4 limits.cpu.nodes=2

Specification: [LXD] Restrict CPU placement to NUMA nodes
Documentation: https://linuxcontainers.org/lxd/docs/master/reference/instance_options/#resource-limits

User authentication information in API

To allow for the LXD UI and other similar consumers to know who the user is logged in as and what authentication was used, additional metadata has been added to the API.

Example:

stgraber@dakara:~$ lxc info s-shf-cluster: | grep -i ^auth_user
auth_user_name: stgraber@stgraber.net
auth_user_method: candid

New release signing key

Due to the move of LXD under the Canonical organisation this release and future releases of LXD will be signed by Thomas Parrott, using this key .

Looks like there is an issue on my side with lxc rebuild command.

I have 3 instances in a project that are running :

When I want to rebuild one instance with the --force flag, let’s say ingress, it shutdown all the instance in my project. However, instances in other projects like here are not affected.

One thing important to note is the setup inside the other containers are not affected, only the rebuilded container is reset, so there is no data loss incident  The problem does not occur when I shut down the container myself and start a rebuild.

I just opened an issue : https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/11877

https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/11508 postponed once again :frowning:

Thanks this will be fixed in 5.15 snap.

Great ! :slightly_smiling_face:

LXD 5.15 is now available in the latest/candidate channel and will be rolled out to stable users next week.

The release live stream is going to happen 2023-06-23T18:00:00Z instead of the usual Monday slot as I’ll be away next week.

One of our team has recently started looking into whether this can be resolved.

@mezobari the fix for that will be in LXD 5.16:

Is this announcement still not published on the official page? The Japanese translation is done

Oops, pushed now.

Quick question - don’t want to run lxd via snapd.

How should one go about creating the .deb file for this?

Debian has a native deb for LXD 5.0.x.

The signing key appears to have been changed in this release. The original signing key used for all releases up until this point was @stgraber’s key (602F567663E593BCBD14F338C638974D64792D67) but the new key (ED1CA1E7A6F80E22E5CB2DA84ACE106615754614) claims to be @tomp’s (though it has no signatures and I can’t find any mention of this key in the LXD repo or website).

Not to poke any bears, but is this related to the change of ownership of the LXD repository? Should we expect all releases to be signed with this key from now on? Or should we expect both keys to be used for signing?

Hi,

Yes indeed at the time of the LXD 5.15 release the move under Canonical was not announced yet.

But now it is I can point you to the announcement of the change of signing keys:

But going forward, we will stick to the same release cadence as before. The releases will be signed by Thomas Parrott, using this key .
