If I want to leverage the isolation that full virtualization offers and increase the security of my live container with dir storage, is it possible to convert/migrate an existing lxd container to an lxd vm?
No. Containers don’t have a full disk with partitions, bootloader, kernel, … which would be needed to boot as a VM.
