How to initialize and start a VM instance on ChromeOS?

Hello,

based on the blog post OpenBSD in LXD by Tobias Heider, after setting up the container, I am not able to start it. Instead, I get the following error message:

Error: Failed to handle idmapped storage: No such file or directory: “/mnt/stateful/lxd/storage-pools/default/containers/openbsd/rootfs”

Did someone try something similar and point me towards a solution?

Also, I am able to start other images, e.g. an Alpine Linux container from images.linuxcontainers.org. This question is about local images created inside crosh.

OpenBSD doesn’t provide an LXC container itself - I started from scratch:

$ lxc init openbsd --empty -c limits.cpu=4 -c limits.memory=4GiB
$ lxc config device override openbsd root size=20GiB size.state=4GiB
$ cd /tmp && curl -O https://cdn.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/7.4/amd64/install74.img
$ lxc config device add openbsd install disk source=/tmp/install74.img boot.priority=10

At this point I should be ready to start the OpenBSD container.

I also tried to move the openbsd image to another storage pool obsd-pool but this didn’t solve anything for me.
