IncusOS is Starting indefinitely

That lexar usb stick is actually is quite old and slow. Turns out it booted to a state where IncusOS expected a seed and would not operate. I put the exact same image on a much newer sandisk (like the one I used for the ubuntu live), and that actually does work just fine. Booted and operational.

I was having issues booting from the ISO provided by the IncusOS image downloader, which I had written to a USB stick to install on a NUC. I tried multiple different USB sticks but none worked. I gave up and installed Proxmox VE.

Today I tried again but chose the USB version instead of the ISO, and it worked and I was able to successfully install IncusOS, replacing Proxmox.

Yeah, if you’re going to be booting from a USB drive, you need to download the image that’s listed for use with USB drives.

There are some systems out there that are extra smart and detect an ISO (2048 bytes alignment) having been written to a USB stick and will handle conversion on the fly for you, but that’s somewhat rare.

Ah, I see the instructions for installation on a physical system mentions USB and a raw image but the download side just mentions USB, not raw. I’ll send a small documentation tweak to make it clearer to use the USB image instead of that “raw” which doesn’t appear anywhere.

On a tangentially related note, is there any possibility of reducing the size of the image so that it could fit on to say, a 2 GB USB stick? I recall from watching your videos that there is only 500 MB of data in the image, and the rest is padding.

The data size of the downloaded image is indeed around 550MB, but once the target system boots, it will download another 200MB or so for Incus, then double the whole thing for the A/B storage and that’s before it allocates any space to store its own data.

The actual minimum target disk size is around 35GB though we usually say 50GB of space is needed on the target.

**RESOLVED BY BOOTING FROM SATA ATTACHED SSD (USB FAILED).
STEPS THAT FIXED THIS:

  • downloaded (and configured) USB image
  • attached old (small) SATA drive to system, directly on SATA bus (not USB)!
  • boot into std. linux, “dd” downloaded image to disk (find device using i.e. “lsblk”, doublecheck this is the right device, then tripplecheck, then “dd” image to disk something like “sudo dd if=IncusOS_202511100256.img of=/dev/sda bs=1m”, “sync”, reboot)
  • properly enable secure boot, boot from SATA
  • IncusOS installs
  • waited some time to give system time to sync, then rebooted using Ctrl-Alt-Del (its not USB so can’t really remove - well, maybe, but didn’t dare)

——– ORIGINAL PROBLEM (and System) DESCRIPTION ——-**

I seem to be having same/similar issue on one of my systems: System boots into “IncusOS is starting…” screen, then hits timeout after about 10min (“You are in emergency mode…”) EDIT: changed this from original post - tweaking BIOS brought me to this, probably had secureboot(?) or something not configured correctly

Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H (B150 chipset, so not very new, flashed with latest BIOS though) with INTEL i5-6400T, 0.5TB NVMe (970 EVO Plus), 16GB RAM

  • a dual INTEL GbE plugged (I’m however using the onboard)
  • hardware TPM in 20pin header (seems to be working, BIOS shows new config options for Trusted Computing, linux shows TPM dmesgs and TPM device, but did not test further)

What I did:
1.) created installer (initially selected ISO, but did not boot, then changed for USB which seemed to boot)
2.) initially booted BIOS in setup mode, booted, IncosOS printed count down and seemed to install keys
=> seems this worked, I do see e.g. /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/KEK-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c in linux which is “Incus OS - Secure Boot KEK R110U”
3.) reboot, system booted again
4.) system boots into blank screen with “IncusOS is starting…” message, then timeout after about 10min with “You are in emergency mode…” message (EDIT)

What I tried:

  • removed all other drives besides NVMe (and boot USB)
  • waited for 20 minutes
  • trolled through BIOS settings a couple of times attempting to change some of the storage related settings
  • removed the dual INTEL GbE NIC (so literarely only mainboard+CPU+RAM+NVMe)
  • later found my BIOS also supports firmware TPM, so tried this as well (might have improved behaviour - now hitting timeout)

Note: I did verify my CPU supports x86-64-v3.

Any thoughts on what I should/could do here?

Highly apreciate all your input…

Did you check if there’s any kind of RAID mode in the BIOS?
That’s been the most common issue with NVME drives on Intel systems.

No kind of RAID in my BIOS - went through the entire BIOS settings.

I got my system to boot by dd-ing the IncusOS image to a SATA SSD, and booting from installer from SSD! Obviously I don’t have any logs, but it feels like there is some kind of issue with USB controller on my B150 mainboard (I did try multiple different USB sticks).

@k-bx I think the title could be re-worded to make it more visible.

Could you please edit the thread title to something like IncusOS got stuck while booting?

Please create a new topic and stop hijacking my question!

Really hate to do this to after your post but it seems redundant to make a new thread when I can add 1 correlation post…. Sorry.

Similar issue to above (hang on Incus is starting then Emergency Mode press Enter loop), thing in common was using a USB key (this time a proper USB key, a Swissbit U-50n rather than a SSD in an enclosure) to run IncusOS.

Tried disabling my HBA (a Broadcom 9600-24i) without effect. All onboard storage controllers set to AHCI (ASUS x670e Proart, 9950X). Only thing I didnt do was remove attached drives (4xNVMe drives, 4xSATA SSD’s) and the GPU (9070XT).

So you got the USB image, did you get the installation or operation image?
If installation, did the installation go through and then the installed system isn’t booting or is it the USB install media itself that’s not booting?

@gibmat can we easily add logic to this path in the initrd so we can dump all the block devices (probably cat /proc/partitions and also list all the USB devices)?

Operation image

I’ve opened:

Which may help us get a better idea of what’s going on on boot failure.
Combined with:

Which will give us a good idea of what can actually be used in early boot and let us tweak that list to handle new use cases as we see them.

In your case, can you easily boot your system onto a regular Linux OS?
If so, please provide:

  • dmesg (soon after boot)
  • lspci -k
  • ls -lh /sys/class/block/*/device/driver /sys/class/block/*/device/device/driver

I looked at a few AMD systems here and they’re all on the built-in USB controller, but maybe your system is different somehow and needs extra drivers for USB devices to be accessible.

Yeah, it hopefully won’t be too hard to add some sort of service that executes as part of systemd’s emergency.target logic.
