I’ve just installed IncusOS but it has no indicator of progress upon starting, just showing the starting message.
Is there a way to see logs?
I’ve just installed IncusOS but it has no indicator of progress upon starting, just showing the starting message.

Give it 10-15min, then it should hit the actual timeout.
This is usually what we’d expect if the storage controller in your system isn’t supported by the IncusOS early boot (initrd).
If after 10-15min you get a timeout error, it’d be very useful if you could boot that machine on a traditional Linux distro like a live desktop image or something and then give us a dump of lsmod and ls -lh /sys/class/block/*/device/device/driver.
We basically need to pin down what storage controller driver is used by this system, then we can add it to our initrd so a future image will boot correctly after installation.
We can also make a bit of a guess as to what this may be if we knew more about the machine. What CPU vendor is this? When was it built? Is that a NVMe or SATA drive?
(Note that there still won’t be much of a log or shell access after the timeout, but it would confirm that we’re dealing with a storage issue at least)
Will do! Only awaited couple minutes.
It’s Dell OptiPlex Micro 7020. It also had problems shutting down when installation finished, had to power-off.
Okay. The first thing I’d do is go in the BIOS and see if they have storage modes in there. If there is something like “RAID” mode, turn that off, you want the drives to be directly accessible to the OS.
Hello everyone, I run a Lenovo M710q, and tried to install IncusOS with also failure. Perhaps are also the storage drivers. Like suggested by @stgraber below is the information (if it worths include this drivers):

Thank you in advance
Were you able to check your BIOS for any setting related to RAID or Intel VMD which could be causing this issue?
From what you’re showing, this should be a pretty standard NVMe set up, so I’m wondering if there’s some weirdness coming out of the motherboard here.
You are correct, it was in BIOS mode indeed. I’ve put it to nvme mode:
I’m not sure if that was the thing which helped or that I just didn’t wait enough last time, after 3 minutes it boots further now.
Yeah, it probably was the issue. I’ll look at including that Intel driver, though in general you get better performance when you have those kind of built-in RAID features disabled (unless you’re actually using it for RAID).
Might have a related issue for a system based on the Asrock x570 Phantom Gaming 4 motherboard (BIOS: 5.67 from 2025/9/8).
Created the .img from IncusOS downloader
Issue, hangs at IncusOS is starting for 10-15 min then outputs a message about emergency mode. Repeats this forever.

You are in emergency mode. After logging in, type “journalctl -xb” to view
system logs, “systemctl reboot” to reboot, or “exit”
to continue bootup.Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.

(I removed the AMD gpu since this output, leaving only the Nvidia RTX)

Did you get to check your BIOS for some kind of RAID or similar config option?
I did. The only attached drive is NVMe via AHCI mode. Would that even matter when running IncusOS in operating mode from the usb SSD I put the img on?
Ah no, that wouldn’t matter.
What kind of USB device is that?
Is it a simple USB stick or a USB enclosure/SSD thing?
I see uas loaded (USB attached SCSI) which is different from regular usb-storage.
I’ll make sure we have uas in our early kernel modules as well as that Intel RAID driver so we can hopefully quickly solve both.
base: Add Intel vmd driver by stgraber · Pull Request #537 · lxc/incus-os · GitHub should take care of the most common Intel RAID mode issue.
For the USB drive, I’m confused because we do have uas already included…
Would be great if you could share some more details on the type of drive used.
Disk is AHCI. I have the same output loop:
IncusOS is starting…

Are any additional details that I can share? Maybe is the Lenovo m710q Tiny…
Hello, I found the issue. Was due the fact that I have an operating system installed in the nvme disk. I cleaned the partitions, and select the option in IncusOS installer to “Wipe the disk”.
Not just a USB stick. This: SAMSUNG T7 Portable SSD, 1TB External Solid State Drive, Speeds Up to 1,050MB/s, USB 3.2 Gen 2, Reliable Storage for Gaming, Students, Professionals, MU-PC1T0T/AM, Gray
I’ll connect it and do another lsmod, lsusb, lspci from live media in a bit
I can also try running from a simple usb stick instead
While booted into ubuntu live with the samsung t7 attached. (ubuntu is on the sandisk (128 g)

Tried the same with a Lexar USB stick. Worked fine. Guess something is up/different with that samsung t7. See output in my previous post if you want to investigate but don’t do that for me. I just wanted to get it running.
I’ve got some T7 SSDs on some dev systems here, but not on anything we’re using for IncusOS (they’re riscv64 system).
It’s interesting that the Lexar worked though. My first guess was going to be some issue with the xhci controller as I don’t know that we have the renesas xhci driver in the initrd.
