LXD/LXC — Migration of persistent data

I don’t understand what happens to data stored in a directory when an LXC container is migrated to another node.

– Does all the data in an LXC directory go along for the ride? – If not, what must be done to move the data to the new node?

Many thanks,

LRP

LXD will move all the data during a lxc move, well, all the instance data.
If you have external storage volumes attached, you’ll want to separate transfer those with a lxc storage volume move.

Thank you, Stephane,

Please pardon my ignorance. But can you please explain the difference between instance data and external storage volumes?

Not coming from an engineering background, but seriously interested in LXD/LXC for a project I’m working toward, my mental model of how LXD/LXC implement and execute persistence is still much fuzzier than I need.

Many thanks,

LRP

Normally everything is part of the instance data unless you’ve manually created custom storage volumes and attached them to some path inside one or multiple instances.

Is an instance one container or an LXD node?

Thanks again.

LRP

A container or virtual machine managed by LXD.

Thanks Stephane.

I much appreciate your outstanding work.
