in a newly setup ubuntu 18.04 without zfs, I started lxd init with all the defaults, now I added a mirror zfs, is there a way to move lxd to zfs? Thanks,

You can setup a new zfs backed storage pool using a dataset from your mirror zfs as the source, you can then use lxc move with the --storage option to move containers between storage pools.
