My lxd cluster in crashing

Hey guys.

Description

I own tree raspberry Pi 3, running under ubuntu 18.04. I’ve configured a cluster with these tree raspi, which means a cluster of tree nodes. I really like the way everything is centralized in
cluster mode.

The configuration is pretty basic :

Storage : directory
Network : Bridged via eth0
Profil : default
Image : Ubuntu 18.04

At first I wanted a shared storage location, I tried to use an ISCSI target on my Synology NAS, but it wasn’t fast enough and I faced a few issues keeping them mounted permanentely.

I own 7 containers and I need some more to complete my infrastructure.

Anyway, there is some output :

$ sudo lxc cluster ls

Problem

Although I really want to keep my infrastructure in cluster mode, I begin to believe that raspbi are not powerfull enough when there is heavy traffic into a container.

Example :

My fileServer (Najedha) has a samba service running on it. The host which contains the container (rasticut) has a USB stick plugged.

I’ve a share locacted in /media/share, and I’ve mounted the attached usb stick in the samba share (from the container) --> /media/share/torrent. I’ve mounted my samba share from my windows computer and I use it to transfert heavy file directly on the usb stick through the samba share.

Consequently, all of my nodes turn offline, and half of my container are in an error state (even though they keep running well).

I haven’t set any RAM or CPU restriction on my container, that must be a performance issue and I want to be able to make a good diagnostic and maybe find a way to avoid this crash

It’s just an example, there is other manipulation leading to this situation …

Thank you !

The dmesg output on the system that went offline would likely be interesting to see what’s going on.

I know that some, if not all, raspberry pi use a single USB hub which is shared between the USB ports AND the network card.

So the case where you’re pushing or pulling a lot of data over the network from/to a USB drive should be about as bad as it gets on a Pi and may cause sufficient USB bandwidth usage to take down the rest of the USB devices, including your network port.

Running out of memory could also be an issue indeed, depending on how things may get buffered during the transfer.

Both cases will likely result in the kernel complaining though, either because of high latency on network/storage/usb or because of running into low memory.

Thank you for this quick answer.

There is the output of dmesg in the node that contains the fileserver.

I hope this output will help !

Thank you !

I think that your trace shows pretty much that @stgraber is right and that the Raspberry Pi3 limitations are kicking in. For your “file server” you could consider doing a big investment and buy a more powerful node, as if by magic the Raspberry foundation has just produced the Pi4 that don’t have this link between network and USB (there is a full 1 Gb network link) AND the USB is 3.0, that should boost the disk output by 10 times in theory, since you use an USB 3 key. If you want the budget version the 1 GB Ram Pi 4 is not much more costly than a Pi3B. Remember to add a specific heat sink since it’s said to be the weak point of the Pi 4. Or buy another system.

So, there is nothing else to do than changing my hardware ?

I got my all infrastructure into containers and having them stack into a cluster is really enjoyable, it makes management a pleasure …

I don’t know what to do, my cluster are crashing at least once a week, even when I’m not transfering files, with no real reason …

I don’t know how to do a precise analysis of an intermittent problem based on a single trace, not even knowing the details of the systems used. I reviewed again your huge trace (again because you waited no less than 25 days to reply…) and I based my reply on the ‘sockets errors’. However you have heaps of errors about CIFS (notoriously hellish to configurate and prone to display tons of meaningless warnings) and a few disconnects of your memory card. This could be a problem with it, Raspberry PI 3 is also notorious for being particularly fastidious with some memory cards that are not conforming to its undocumented standards. I got burned with this myself, dozen of crashings, changed of memory card model and since then my Pi3 works flawlessly.

Thank you !

Yes sorry for my late reply … After this event, I stopped my container which is running transmission service, and rebooted my cluster. ( systemctl reload snap.lxd.daemon on every node )

Alternatively, I’ll wait for the next crash and send here a clear trace of every event that appear at this precise time.

Thanks again !
