PCI passthrough not working (IGB NIC to pfSense) / IOMMU issue?

Good morning!

I’m trying to pass an INTEL NIC (igb) to my pfSense VM - ideally pci passthrough (for security and performance reasons, but also to ensure same interface name on pfSense to ensure XMLRPC config sync works).

I keep failing with this error message when starting the VM:

Its difficult for me to understand whats going on in IncusOS, but based on the very end of my post I’m wondering if IOMMU is properly enabled/loaded at all?

1.) Trying to pass with “nictype=physical”:

3.) I’ve tried to pass both endpointes - no difference

4.) Tried to pci passthrough an NVMe device on my TEST system (different system, also INTEL, but Z690 based) - failed exactly the same way

I am attempting this for the first time with Incus/IncusOS, so could be that I’m missing something completely different?

I haven’t used incusOS, but I can tell you how to verify if IOMMU is properly enabled if you are using an intel cpu:

dmesg | grep --color -i -e DMAR -e IOMMU

You should see the output if IOMMU is properly enabled:

DMAR: IOMMU enabled
DMAR: Intel(R) Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O

If you didn’t see, try add this in /etc/default/grub and update-grub and reboot:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="intel_iommu=on iommu=pt"

You should check vfio too:

dmesg | grep -i vfio

The output should be something like this:

VFIO - User Level meta-driver version: 0.3

If not add this in /etc/modules, and update-initramfs -u -k all and reboot:

vfio
vfio_iommu_type1
vfio_pci

Maybe check vt-x too:

lscpu | grep --color Virtualization

Can you look at the IncusOS system log for the current boot? incus admin os debug log

That should include a record of the kernel command line options and all the kernel boot messages.

I’m pretty sure I’ve at least tried to have IOMMU set to passthrough mode for everyone but it sounds like something is wrong here…

Did you get IOMMU and device passthrough working on this system prior to installing IncusOS?

If not, you’ll want to go look at your BIOS menu as depending on platforms you may need to enable some stuff in there.

IOMMU and device passthrough did work previously on this very system:
Running NixOS, pfSense with igp passthrough with virsh (not incus - seems I’m making two steps at once).
I did have
boot.kernelParams = [ “consoleblank=60” “amd_iommu=on” “intel_iommu=on” ];
previously (the amd_iommu was probably meaningless).
I have to admit though that I had todo quite a few changes in BIOS to get IncusOS finally installed - I am however quite confident VT-d/IOMMU should be fine.

On my primary (different system which is still running NixOS, and primary pfSense in passthrough) I see these kernel log messages.
They seem to be missing from IncusOS - I think this might be expected due to the “pt” passed, but then how would a specific device such as my igb get iommu turned back on?

you are right, on a working NixOS system I see

On the IncusOS system currently failing pci passthrough I don’t have any “vfio” line (VT-x seems to be there according to lscpu).

Since this is IncusOS and I’m not rebuilding I can’t add kernel parameters or modules.

This is probably kernel dependent, but I was under the impression that amd_iommu was always enabled and that only intel_iommu had a toggle.

The kernel command line documentation also doesn’t have a on flag for amd_iommu

Yeah, I looked at what we did in our CI and we set both to on just in case, but indeed don’t seem to require it on the AMD side, which explains why we didn’t run into the issue as all our production deployments are on AMD EPYC…
