are there any plans yet to support Gluster as a storage backend?

There aren’t. We’ve only really seen demand for CEPH so far which is what we support right now and even then, we’ve seen very very few deployments of it at this point.
Maintaining a storage backend is a lot of work (as it’s often affected by new features elsewhere) and takes quite a bit of testing/CI time too. So we want to make sure that a new backend has a lot of demand for it before we consider adding one.
