If by ubuntu desktop you mean ubuntu with a graphical interface, lxd works for me on an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with Wayland if that matters there is absolutely no difference in lxd snap in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS server and graphical. I don’t think there is one with other Ubuntu versions either.
There is no graphical interface provided by Ubuntu, I think that there is one provided by third party, if that’s what you want check this forum there was a posting about it.
To add to this, if you have Ubuntu Desktop, there is the added option to run graphical applications from within an LXD container at full graphics acceleration. It is specially suitable for gaming or running Wine, so that your desktop does not get polluted with unnecessary packages.
