Introduction
The LXD team is very excited to announce the release of LXD 5.4!
This should be the beginning of us pushing out quite a few new features over the next few releases with this one coming with one major new feature and the foundation needed for more to come.
Enjoy!
Upgrade notes
Changes to vsock API (LXD VMs)
As part of the work on the bi-directional vsock interface (see below), we noticed the our TLS arrangement for host to guest communications inside of LXD VMs was quite broken.
Nothing that would be a concern from a security standpoint as the server and client authentication were all done correctly, but for some reason we were doing TLS over TLS which doubled the overhead for no good reason and actually prevented the REST/HTTP layer from accessing details about the client.
This release fixes this issue by updating both LXD and the VM agent to only do a single layer of TLS. Unfortunately, this isn’t something we could handle in a backwards compatible way…
As a result, upon upgrading to LXD 5.4, agent communication will break with all running virtual machines. This will affect lxc exec
and lxc file
. Restarting the affected VMs with lxc restart
will correct this by having the VM restart with an updated version of the agent.
New features and highlights
Load-balancers (OVN)
The biggest new feature in this release. This introduces the concept of network load balancers to LXD.
Similar in concept to the existing network forwards feature, load-balancers differ in that a particular address or port can have multiple target with OVN handling load-balancing by hashing the source and destination addresses.
This is all handled through lxc network load-balancer
and is currently restricted to OVN networks.
Documentation: How to configure network load balancers - LXD documentation
Specification: [LXD] Network load-balancers (OVN)
Bi-directional vsock interface (VM)
For LXD VMs, the LXD daemon interacts with an agent (lxd-agent) running inside of the virtual machine. This allows for things like lxc exec
and lxc file
to work in a similar way with a VM as they would a container.
This is done through each VM listening on vsock and the host connecting to the agent.
However until this release, there was no way for the agent to connect to the host.
This was mostly fine with the only side effect of this being some missing features over the /dev/lxd guest API. But with more planned work for VM features, we really needed a way for the agent to directly connect to the host.
This is now possible with this release as LXD will itself listen on vsock and allow VMs to connect to it. Similarly to our normal agent connections, this is all authenticated through TLS certificates so LXD can tell what VM is talking to it and ensure that it is in fact the agent (or something having access to the agent keys) talking to it.

Reworked storage documentation
Following our recent rework of the networking documentation, in this release, it’s the storage documentation that got significantly reworked and reorganized.
This brings in a much clearer structure, some new content and will keep evolving over the next few releases.
Documentation: About storage pools and storage volumes - LXD documentation
Consistent storage volume configuration
As part of the documentation effort above, we discovered some inconsistencies in how storage volume configurations were applied to storage volumes.
Specifically, storage pools can have configuration keys with the following pattern volume.XYZ
. Those keys should then be applied to any newly created volume, effectively acting as a default value.
Where things weren’t consistent is that not all volume keys were supported and moreover, when supported, in some cases the key would be correctly copied into the volume config but in other cases, it would not and instead be propagated from the pool to the volumes, leading to issues should the pool configuration be modified.
LXD 5.4 makes all of this consistent by having all storage volumes keys be supported and by having them all only get copied from pool to volume at creation time.
Project support in lxd-benchmark
The built-in benchmarking tool, lxd-benchmark
(lxd.benchmark
for snap users) hasn’t been touched in quite a few years. While dusting it off recently, we noticed that its lack of project support was problematic for us and trivial to add.
So now, it’s been added and lxd-benchmark
will now accept a --project NAME
argument.
